Experience The Music

Appreciate the depth and breadth of jazz, and its legacy, through our outstanding line-up of world-class artists.

Boney James

During his 30-year career, Boney has earned four Grammy nominations, two NAACP Image Award nominations and a Soul Train Award, while a dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart. His collaborators in the past include a who’s who of R&B and soul: Raheem DeVaughn, Faith Evans, George Benson, George Duke, Dwele, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, Anthony Hamilton, Jaheim, Eric Benét, Dave Hollister, Stokley Williams, Kenny Lattimore and Angie Stone.
Nicknamed by bandmates while on tour in Oslo, Norway, after jokingly threatening to starve himself on a threadbare per diem, Boney or Bones or Boneman (though his wife calls him Jimmy) has put in his proverbial 10,000 hours as a musician, performer, writer and producer. At age 10, the New Rochelle, NY native picked up the sax after 2 years on the clarinet and never looked back, parlaying his love of R&B –Motown, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Curtis Mayfield and Grover Washington, Jr. — into a musical aesthetic. He turned pro before his 20th birthday and became an in-demand touring sax and keyboard player for Morris Day, the Isley Brothers, Teena Marie, Bobby Caldwell, Randy Crawford and many others. Increasingly frustrated by playing other people’s music, Boney launched his own solo career with 1992’s Trust on the indie Spindletop Records. His subsequent 17 studio albums – including a pair of Christmas records – have been released by Warner Bros., Verve and Concord, with 1995’s Seduction, 1997’s Sweet Thing and 1999’s Body Language all RIAA certified gold. In 2015, Boney’s futuresoul spent 11 weeks atop the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and was the best-selling Contemporary Jazz Record of 2015.

eric benet

Eric Benét is a contemporary R&B singer with mild hip-hop and strong adult contemporary influences. As a teenager, he performed in a family vocal group (appropriately named Benét) with his sister and cousin. The group signed with EMI and released an eponymous album in 1992 that largely went unnoticed. Eric blazed his own trail as a solo artist shortly afterward, signing to Warner Bros. and releasing his debut album, True to Myself, in the fall of 1996. A Day in the Life followed in 1999. Its first single, a cover of Toto’s “Georgy Porgy,” was a moderate radio hit, but it was the album’s second single, “Spend My Life with You” (featuring Tamia), that helped put him on the map. The song went to number one on the Billboard R&B chart, was certified gold, and received a nomination for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Benét’s popularity was on the rise, and A Day in the Life went platinum and earned a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male.

Bob James

From his first days in Marshall, Missouri, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that same year for Mercury Records. More than 60 albums and innumerable awards would follow through the next six decades.

The career of Bob James is truly long, varied, and continues to evolve at every turn.

Damien Escobar

Hailed as one of the most influential and impactful violinists in modern history— two-time Emmy award-winning artist, Damien Escobar, has spent nearly two decades cementing his legacy as the “King of Strings”. He’s inspired listeners, broke barriers, and created a blueprint for other contemporary violinists who aspire to top the charts and make their way onto main stages around the world. And his work is just getting started. The Jamaica, Queens native who is known for his charisma, sincere humility, and undeniable talent— has always believed the key to his success is rooted in his humble beginnings. It is the main source that keeps him connected to his fans, and cultivates his unending love for performing. And if you’ve heard his story you know that Escobar’s journey after Juilliard (from which he graduated at the age of 12) wasn’t easy! But his passion and vision took him from playing for straphangers on NYC subways to serenading everyone from Oprah to the Obamas while achieving several lifetime goals in between— including an NAACP award nomination, topping the 100 Billboard charts, and selling 1M+ records. In 2022 Escobar sold out venues across the nation with his “Life Out Loud” tour — an inspiring experience intended to affirm audiences to live authentically and unapologetically. And with new ventures, including new music being developed, Escobar is letting it be known that his reign as the King of Strings will not cease. With an upcoming album slated to drop in 2023, Escobar is on a mission to prove there’s astonishing power in instrumental music and his intention is to motivate listeners and make an impact on mainstream music like never before.

After party djs:
Russ & CJ

host: Chris Spencer

He is a writer and producer, known for Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996), Postal (2007) and Real Husbands of Hollywood (2013).

Sunday’s host:
Robin Latimore

Robin started singing as a little girl for devotion at her mother’s revival services and in church. “When your mom is the minister, you don’t have a choice”. It was her parents who sparked her musical interest. Her dad had a passion for traditional and contemporary jazz as well as big band swing, and her mom pushed gospel and inspirational music. Together, Robin developed a love for these two genres more than any other.

She is a graduate of The Fort Valley State College where her talent was nurtured and requested highly. After winning several talent competitions there, people started noticing that this young lady had talent. She joined her first band in 1988. The Darren Winters Ensemble displayed a huge array of different music styles and this was something that sparked Robin’s interest in singing more than one type of music. She is no stranger to R & B, Rap, Country Western, and other alternative genres. She is heavily influenced by her idols Phyliss Hyman, Layla Hathaway, Oleta Adams, The Clark Sisters, Kim Burrell, Maysa, and Jennifer Holiday.

Even with all this, Robin couldn’t (and wouldn’t) escape her gospel heritage. She started working as a choir director in Warner Robins, Georgia at the age of 19 and has continued to share her views on gospel music as well as teaching it with several denominational churches. “It gives me such a rush when gospel music is sang and ministered with passion”. She continues to do this same type of work, as she is the current Music Director of a prominent Baptist church in Lithonia, Ga.

Currently, Robin is the lead vocalist for her band “Robin Latimore and the Bad Boys”. She has recently shared the stage with jazz greats Johnathan Butler, Maysa, Rachelle Ferrell, Michael Franks, Phil Perry, and Jeff Lorber. As exciting as that was, she anxiously awaits the release of her upcoming CD project. This project has an anticipated release of late Summer 2015.

With her already hectic schedule, she continues to flourish her self-made business, Robin’s Singing Telegrams of Atlanta. “This business will always be my baby. The looks of disbelief, the tears, and the shock of the whole experience makes me want to do this forever!”
